Configure Microsoft Outlook

To configure Microsoft Outlook for use with IMAP, do the following.

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook and and go to Tools>Email Accounts...
    Result: Beginning with the Email Accounts dialog, you are presented with a series of dialogs to configure the Microsoft Outlook mail application.

    Note: If Outlook runs a wizard on opening, select Cancel to get out of the wizard and then proceed with Step 1.


  2. Select Add a new email account and click Next.
    Result: The Email Accounts "Server Type" dialog appears.

  3. Choose IMAP as the server type and click Next.
    Result: The Email Accounts "Internet Email Settings" dialog appears.

  4. As seen below, enter:
    • Your Name
    • Email Address, e.g. first.last@ci.sultan.wa.us
    • User Name, e.g. jdoe
    • Incoming mail server (IMAP)
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) - mail.ci.sultan.wa.us


    Note

    Note: For security reasons, it is suggested that you do not enter your password at this time. Once you are finished with the this procedure, Outlook will prompt you to enter your password prior to sending/receiving email.


  5. From the Email Accounts dialog (above), click the More Settings... button
    Result: The next Internet Email Settings dialog box appears containing four tabs.

  6. Click the Outgoing Server tab.
    Result: The Outgoing Server information displays.

  7. Click the checkbox for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Leave the default setting to Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.
    Result: The checkbox is selected. The screen below shows that you've checked the box for the outgoing server and that the default for the settings has remained.

  8. Note! If you are unable to send mail from your home Internet connection, click the "Advanced" tab and change your outgoing server port or SMTP port from 25 to 26.
