Welcome to Sultan’s Parks

No matter where you are in Sultan you are within walking distance of salmon bearing rivers and streams, trails, open space, and active recreation facilities. The City of Sultan has over 116 acres of parks and open space

The city’s park system is extremely diverse and offers something for everyone and then some: the serenity of Osprey Park’s wetlands and riverfront trail system; active sports fields at Reese Park and the Cemetery Ball field; a skate park and performance gazebo at River Park; and a boat launch at Sportsman’s Park serving fisherman from all over the world.

We invite you to come and explore Sultan’s many parks and enjoy the natural beauty we call home.

Park and Recreation Open Space (PROS) Plan

A Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan serves as a long-range vision for future development and programming of community parks and recreation facilities. The plan is conceptual in nature and not intended to address detailed issues related to engineered site design or park operations. Items addressed in this PROS Plan include planning park elements, determining suitable levels of service (LOS) for current and anticipated populations, identifying appropriate recreational facilities, general design concerns, and planning-level cost estimates for capital improvements and maintenance.

Sultan residents value their parks and recreational facilities. Like Sultan's population, the community's parks and recreation needs are growing. The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan Update will provide the public a way to help determine where parks are needed, how many parks are needed, and what types (passive/active) of amenities to incorporate into the park system.

The Plan will also help City staff to best manage the City’s parks resources by providing estimates of the costs to implement and maintain the future park system. This plan combines public input with analyses of current and future parks and recreational facilities needs to create a blueprint for Sultan’s parks over the next 15 years.

Comment on the 2011 Draft Park and Recreation Open Space Plan

Determination of Non-significance (DNS)

The proposed non-project action is the adoption of the 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan that will guide the City’s future parks, recreation and open space operations, maintenance and development activities. The 2020 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan is Sultan’s 20-year functional plan, describing the strategies and policies that would implement the City’s Comprehensive Plan – Parks Element.

Comments: Written comments may be submitted to the City of Sultan at 319 Main Street, Suite 200 prior to 5:00 pm on October 7, 2010. A 14-day comment period is applicable to this DNS as provided by WAC 197-11-340(2)(a)(v). Unless alternative action is taken by the City of Sultan, this DNS shall become final at the end of the comment period.

SEPA Environmental Checklist

This is a programmatic-level SEPA checklist review analyzing potential environmental impacts of a non-project action.

This is non-project action to adopt the 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan to guide the City’s future parks, recreation and open space operations, maintenance and development activities. The 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan is Sultan’s 20-year functional plan, describing the strategies and policies that would implement the City’s Comprehensive Plan - Parks Element.

The 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan 2004 will be adopted by reference in the 2010 Sultan Comprehensive Plan Update as a City of Sultan Resolution.

The 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan itself will not cause impacts to the environment; some of the future actions identified in the 2010 Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan may cause environmental impacts. Future project actions will be evaluated for environmental impacts separately, subject to SEPA requirements.
